A Few Words About Us
Somalatha Subasinghe Play House, the training arm of the LCYTF, selects young individuals with high school qualifications based solely on their commitment to theatre. These individuals undergo structured training in drama, theatre arts, and traditional Sri Lankan drama and dance forms. LCYTF serves as the national representative of ASSITEJ International, a global theatre network for children and youth. LCYTF's commitment to excellence and its global connections have enabled it to engage in various international children’s and youth theatre events since 1998. LCYTF is renowned for producing musical theatre for children and youth, collaborating with professional artistes, and creating award-winning mainstream theatre productions performed locally and internationally. Currently, three of LCYTF drama productions are prescribed texts in the national curriculum for school students of grades 5, 6, 7, and 10. Beyond productions, LCYTF contributes to the national development by fostering thought-provoking theatre, hosting an annual theatre festival in Colombo, supporting young artists for international training programmes, festivals, and conferences and collaborating with state and non-state local and international institutions to strengthen various sectors across the country. Incorporated in the Parliament of Sri Lanka under Lanka Children’s and Youth Theatre Foundation (Act No. 3 of 2007) on 29 January 2007, LCYTF aims to undertake, promote, sponsor, and co-ordinate theatre activities in Sri Lanka for children and youth, fostering a broad perspective on the world. LCYTF was honoured with the prestigious “Bunka Award” by the Embassy of Japan for best achievement in performing arts in 1997 and 2005. Ms. Kaushalya Fernando, a director of LCYTF was awarded the same award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to theatre arts and acting.
